We all know the feeling of life crumbling around us. Opportunities crop up, then wither. Years of goals are seemingly squandered after working harder than we’ve ever worked before. We try everything we can to get out of the trench, but in the end, struggling in this quicksand just pulls us deeper. I’m not going to claim I know how to get out or feed you clichés that life will get better and that you’ll overcome. I’ve been given remedy after remedy, all in vane. But, I will humbly offer you this; Keep your heart alive.
Keep your heart alive in two ways. First, keep your passionate fire stoked. These failures may have been your fault or you might not have had any control over it. It doesn’t matter. In either case, don’t lose what makes you feel alive. The fire in your soul that makes you a living, breathing creature with hopes and dreams and desires will not be extinguished by failed expectations. That kiln that burns deep inside you will not be snuffed out by a cold, damp reality. And with that burning furnace, you can heat the lives of others. This is the second way you must keep your heart alive.
When all else fails, don’t lose your compassion, your love, and your empathy for others. What connects us to every human being on earth is our capacity to participate with others with a warm heart. When the world is collapsing and we feel that we have to protect ourselves at every turn, we must not close ourselves off to others. Communication, simply, is the way in which we make ourselves vulnerable to the humanity of others. Through that vulnerability, we can connect to the love and passion of our fellow person. The aliveness through a connection with others will bring forth a wellspring of experience we aren’t often acquainted with. When the burdens of this world come bearing down upon our backs - reach out to others in love, for there can be no greater, final solace than this: when all else failed, I made sure my heart didn’t.
